Hilary Hahn is certainly one of the best young violinists before the public. Now 23 years old, she has abundantly fulfilled her early promise as a radiantly talented as well as singularly earnest prodigy, and grown into a brilliant violinist and a communicative, arresting performer. On this recording, which features Bach's Violin Concertos in A minor, BWV 1041 and E major, BWV 1042, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor, BWV 1043 and the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor, BWV 1060, her flawless technique and strikingly beautiful, intensely focussed tone are on full display. There is a noble, restrained quality in her playing, so that although her tone-production and vibrato are "modern," her sound has a classical, pristine purity. (By contrast, the orchestral sound, though good, is surprisingly lush - a rather odd discrepancy.) Hahn's interplay with her two excellent partners is close and unanimous in tone and style; the less familiar Concerto for violin and oboe is especially compelling. Unfortunately, Hilary Hahn, despite her serious, thoughtful approach to music, seems to have succumbed to the current trend among today's performers--perhaps symptomatic of the jet-age--to play as fast as their fingers will carry them. The fast movements are taken at such speeds that they lose all their elegance, grace and charm, become prone to false accents, and sound aggressive, hectic and breathless. A performer with less musical integrity might be suspected of just wanting to show off her effortless facility. However, Hahn's musicality, expressiveness and affinity for Bach (she has also recorded the unaccompanied solo violin works on Sony) come through in the slow movements, where the playing is calm, expansive enough for carefully shaped phrases, emotionally concentrated, and simply beautiful. --Edith Eisler

    an old guy's 2cents4
Hilary Hahn comes not only as genius, she's a kind of scholar of the violin; precocious and impeccably able. The sound of her fiddle is indeed something worth pursuing. The instrument she uses here is made by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, Paris 1864. Sumptuous sound, and a performance choice made with characteristic elan. I agree with the reviewers who've noted well the atmospherics of this violin. That said, the Bach is fast and scarcely shapely. It's interesting to me that while Hahn is young enough to dare to drive the dance out of Bach, she remains at the same time abundantly musical in all things but tempi. That draws me up short, enough so I'm willing to cede her a true praise and respect even for a recording this unnecessarily tempermental. The protean energy of Bach lies deep within the comely shape of his music; artifice of tempo can neither disguise that forming energy nor supplant it. I long for Hahn to completely find this inner truth of music. But - I'm 57 and if I know music well, perhaps too well sometimes. It's enough to hear wondrous playing like this even in the face of perhaps some musical diminishment, and I say only perhaps. Hahn brings a quite sophisticated joy to music making, and youth and courage, and not a little scholarship - it's a marvel. What's to criticize? I'll listen many times to this Bach, and pray the inordinate sheen never wears away. An extra star for that incredible Vuillaume brings it to 4stars!

One of the best contemporary violinists plays bach5
Bach played by Hilary Hahn is indeed one of the finest interpretations of a great composer. Her sound transmits music maturity. This is a good choice if you enjoy Bach and graceful interpretation.

    Wait! What just happened?2
Maybe I'll catch something if I try to listen to it again. But, do I want to? Great intonation, sound and articulation, though.

Gundula Janowitz had a very beautiful voice that critics like to describe as "creamy," whatever that means. Strauss had a life-long love affair with the soprano voice. He even married one--not just the voice, the whole woman, of course. His Four Last Songs constitute his dying tribute, and they are probably the most hedonistically gorgeous vocal works in existence. Herbert vo Karajan was a Strauss specialist, as was Janowitz, and together they contrive to perform the songs about as perfectly as they ever have been. The couplings, two orchestral works from the beginning and end of Strauss's career, are quite appropriate: the last of the Four Songs quotes the "Transfiguration" theme from the tone poem. --David Hurwitz

    Four Last, near best4
There are many fine versions of Strauss's Four last Songs. This is among the best. Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic have a special affinity for Strauss and Janowitz sings these songs with unadorned beauty.

    Middle of the road Strauss3
The Four Last Lieder recorded by Janowitz and Karajan have always raised controversy. Some listeners admire their perfection (orchestral, at least), but Janowitz's singing has often been criticized for being more pretty than meaningful. I cannot but agree - listen to either of the Schwarzkopf studio recordings (there is also a live one with Karajan available) to measure all you have been missing out with Janowitz! These poems depict the retrospective look of a woman upon her experience of life as she approaches the end of the path - and all that Janowitz ever does here is clinical, detached singing, almost devoid of all humanity.

Karajan's Metamorphosen have often been praised for their orchestral beauty - but to be fair he here mainly uses this work as a demonstration of orchestral virtuosity and beauty of tone from the BPO's string section. His subsequent 1980s recording is much more human and telling, to say nothing of his deeply moving first recording with the VPO for EMI in 1946 - the first recording ever of the Metamorphosen. The second one was Furtwangler in October 1947 (a surprisingly flowing account from this conductor, at 23'), and both recordings along with the ones of Klemperer and Kempe on EMI glow with tragedy and a fatal sense of loss.

Karajan's achievement in Death and Transfiguration is more convincing. At 27' this is one of the longest recorded performances ever, but one that does not lack contrast (the recollection of past events is a trifle self-indulging though). I wouldn't want to be without Klemperer though.

This CD will probably attract many newcomers (which one with Karajan and the BPO wouldn't?), but it would really be very sad if they only knew the Vier letzte Lieder and Metamorphosen through these recordings. The meaning of these works is quite simply not conveyed here.

    Transfigured Strauss5
There's a reason why so many people love this disc--no one knows of a more gorgeous rendering of the Metamorphosen, Tod und Verklarung is sublime, the Four Last Songs are right up there with Schwarzkopf/Szell and Norman/Masur and Karajan, the BPO and DG engineers with burnished analog sound were never more in sync.

Rarely do you have such perfection of composer, conductor, musicians and the technicians that bring it all onto vinyl and then compact disc.

    Best classical guitar music ever5
After hearing a selection from this CD on NPR, I knew I had to purchase a copy. I bought a copy for myself and also as a gift. David Russell takes his guitar to a place that touches your soul and makes your heart sing along. Even if you are not a fan of classical music you will love this CD.

    Air on a G String5
I first heard this CD on pubic radio and knew I had to have it. I was not disapointed. This is truly beautiful music--

    Russell at his best5
Russell's tone always amazes me and his technique is impeccable on this CD as usual.

    Rare Satie5
Although Satie's orchestral output was dwarfed by the number of his works for piano, it's unfortunate that these compositions have not been recorded more. "Parade" stands out in its use of sound effects (gunshots, typewriter) in addition to conventional orchestra. Bravo to Naxos for allowing us the opportunity to hear these pieces.

    A dream!5
This record, a recommendation by Gramophone, is one of the best bargains, even from Naxos.

Parade is fun to listen as Gymnopédies in one of the best performances I have heard.

Th ballets are bizarre, and the music is so sugestive that you can "see" them.

Mr. Kaltenbach makes a correct reading and the Nancy orchestra rises to the top.

    Bravo!

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

The paradox of sensitivity and sentimentality3
The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer speak.

    Romance of the Violin5
Great violin work. Take your time to listen to it in its entirety. You will be trasported to the concert hall without being there.

Never thought I could like the violin this much5
Okay I play the clarinet...maybe not trained but still so I can belt out a few notes...yet. My brother played the violin for many years, but his playing never sounded like this...sorry Dave. Wonderful soft..love the flow to this album. I use it as background music at home the office and to fall asleep with. I will be checking him out more often and his new disc as well.

Kondrashin came to the U.S. in 1958 to conduct concerts for Van Cliburn. While he was recording the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto with Cliburn, RCA also had him make these recordings (originally two LPs) with pickup musicians in New York's Manhattan Center. The nucleus of the orchestra was composed of members of the old NBC Symphony, and the ensemble plays splendidly, with violinist Oscar Shumsky earning his solo credit. Kondrashin leads spirited performances of these warhorses, mostly music so vulgar we should be ashamed of enjoying it as much as we do. RCA's famous "Living Stereo" sound has transferred splendidly to this CD, making it an exquisite, guilty pleasure. --Leslie Gerber

    Melange of classics4
What is not to like about music that carries the listener to distant lands and imbues a sense of animation and fun. Kabalevsky the Comedians has been used by many nature programs to capture the antics and elan of nature's comedians, river otters. The two travelogues by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov provide a wonderous magical trip for listeners that capture and share the souls of Italy and Spain.

    My surprise!5
This is the only Khachaturian I know and this was the album cover I used to stare at when I was 7 and sit on the sofa and listen to the "Masquerade Suite". I could never find it and assumed it was out of print so about 10 years ago, I bought a low budget Naxos version and it worked but didn't quite satisfy. Although still beautiful, it lacked the sweetness. The recording was good though and I just resigned myself to it.

So today I went to review it thinking few people know of Khachaturian. And as I search for it to review, I suddenly see this CD with the very same album cover I used to stare at, reissued! I'm almost in tears of joy! I'm telling you people, The "Masquerade Suite" is just as beautiful as any. The first movement starts off with a loud and lively march. The slow movement "Nocturne" is alluring and cunning. It reels you in one inch at a time and melodically it's truly brilliant. If you buy this disc, you'll not only be enthralled but also discover a little known composer who wrote some pretty astounding music.

    Four Enjoyable Performances5
This CD has four pieces from four composers, all performed by Kiril Kondrashin and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra.

The opening brass fanfare of Tchaikovsky's Capriccio italien is precise and impressive, making it my favorite recording of this work.

The performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol is as good as anyone else's, with a full sound.

The real reason to have the disk is the inclusion of two obscure pieces, Masquerade Suite by Khachaturian and The Comedians by Kabalevsky. The former shows the surface gaiety and underlying tensions at a costume party. The latter is music depicting a troupe of clowns. Both get a lively, engaging treatment.

All four pieces are played with brio and are a joy to hear.

an excellent example of good chamber music5
This is one of thoses compileations you can only dream about. Very well engineered, and you can actually sit through the whole cd without having to skip a dull or underrated track. Every thing fits, & flows without changing the mood. If your just now getting into the confusing world of classical , as I am, Mozart is a good place to start. It helps create a patience , until you have a chance land another well compiled cd.

A great recording of chamber music5
This CD is a great recording of some of Mozart's chamber music. The Kodaly Quartet, Jozsef Kiss, and Jeno Kevehazi play beautifully and all of the pieces are nice listening material.

My favorite work is the Quartet in F Major (K. 370), which is more than enough to justify the purchase of the CD. The second movement adagio is very soothing and the first and third movement allegros were great. The Quintet in E Flat Major (K. 407) was also well done, as well as Ein musikalischer Spass (A Musical Joke, K. 522), which I had been looking forward to hearing for quite some time. I was not disappointed with this rendition.

The sound quality and engineering are good and the liner notes are interesting to read. Naxos has once again produced a great recording for a bargain price...recommended for listeners of Mozart.

    Something missing3
    The second concerto is good.

The first concerto is too reserved. As usual, Bernstein delivered a certain level of power and dynamics. Zimerman, on the other hand, was way too reserved in terms of colors of tone and, particularly, power. My 10-year old son and I found the Rubinstein version (also on DVD) is more satisfactory.

BTW, Zimerman's recital DVD was wonderful; go get that one.

    Oldster and Youngster4
These are beautifully modulated and well-thought out, fairly romantic versions of these great concertos which can easily assimilate more than one point of view as to interpretation. Bernstein seems exceptionaly well-behaved and less dramatic than usual, seemingly simply enjoying the hell out of the music. Zimerman is simply wonderful.

Wonderful Brahms by Bernstein and Zimerman5
These are wonderful, inspired renditions of both piano concertos of Brahms. The playing of Zimerman is of an incredible level (bearing in mind it is a live recording...) His playing is, as always, crystal-clear, with a beautiful sound. This collaboration between Leonard Bernstein and Krystian Zimerman has resulted in a DVD you should not be without!
